"MY CONNECTIONS TO PLAY"

Quotes:

""Children Learn By Doing, and Play Is Their Work""

Kids go where there is excitement. They stay where there is love

Memories of my childhood play time……
My playtime as a child was spent with my aunts and uncles.  I was the only child.  I remember participating in pretend play and Dramatic play. I would dress up like my mom by putting on her high heel shoes and lipstick.   I would also pretend to have a tea party with my dolls and other stuffed animals. My uncles and aunt would pretend to be whatever I wanted them to be.  I remember I would love for my uncle to pretend he was a horse (down on his hands and knees), I would get on his back and enjoy the fun.

Play today is different from the play in which you engaged as a child:
Children of this generation do not get to engage in pretend play as I did as a child.  There are too many electronic games and children are confined to the couch, sitting down in front of a television.  As a child, most of my time was spent outside with family and friends playing “hide and go seek” hopscotch, playing baseball, etc….

  1. Tamakio,

I always love looking at the things you write and you blog is just wonderful! I love the quotes you chose to describe your self and play. After reading your thoughts, I beleive this fits you really good. The reason I say this is because you are a educator and the quotes fit a person wanting to be a teacher. I agree with your thought on children of today not being more creative in their play or even wanting to play in some cases. The video games and other devices have really messed things up for our young. The one thought I will add is, I believe we still have a chance with younger children. The reason I say this is because in preschool the children are so young they don't know about the things that awaiting them. We need to work harder in educating our parents about the importance of play to keep it alive.

  2. Tamakio,
I love your quotes. It's awesome you had aunts and uncles to play with. I agree with Audrey, we do have time to adjust attitudes and thinking. I think we need to start with the parents and policy makers. EC professionals know what needs to be done!

  3. Tamakio,

I absolutely agree with you on the electronic devices in children's lives today. There is so much to do outside and yet, children are glued to the television or playing the PS3. I think it is very cool how your aunts and uncles entertained you as a child. I am not an only child but it seems you had quite the childhood! Great quotes and I agree with Audrey also, we do have a chance to involve play in younger children's lives! Great blog on play Tamakio!

  4. Tamakio,

I appreciate you sharing your childhood experiences! Until reading your blog I had forgotten about how I used to dress up in my mothers hats and my fathers boots and stomp around in the house in them!! Dramatic play is so important for children today to explore different roles and identities. I think that it is wonderful that you had such supportive adults in this area of play!
    Thanks for sharing!
